I shared how I did this on facebook. Here are my pics and descriptions of what I did. Enjoy!
Wrought iron with chainsaw chain tack welded to it, prep for the forge welding in hopes of accomplishing a damascus patter using the toolsteel that is in the chain.

close up, tried to braid the chain in tight

after the weld I cut it into 4 pieces, then slit and drifted holes. Next is to rivet all 4 pieces together. THis is also going to be a bowl and the pattern is only on one side. Splitting it up in 4 pieces allows me to have a pattern on both sides of the bowl.

after the riveting, I forge welded the whole thing together again. It was pushing the wrought iron a little and I ended up with a small tear in the center. So I drifted that to a 3/8″ whole and forge welded the rivet in.

the point of the rivets will also take part in the design. Where they are at will be a void area of any pattern, in all adding some detail and points of focus.

then polished up, tempered and sitting in the acid to etch. Hope it comes out! *update…yeah the acid etching did not work out. I think using the wrought iron was not good in that I could not pull a decent contrast out of it. Made the forge welding easy cheesy though!
